2022 portfolio
This year I started to create artwork in the ceramic medium. I would like to create a new body of work so that I can apply to residencies.

This year I explored turning my drawn, two-dimensional, grid lines from my functional work into something that was three-dimensional. I ultimately landed on using coils as the grid lines. I experimented with different ways to combine the body of the vessel with the gridded coils. This year I also had the pleasure of having my work raku fired, which expanded surface treatment possibilities. I plan on continuing to use coils next year as an element in my work. I hope to create pieces that are bigger in scale.

This year I made a grid vessel that combined a wheelthrown bottom with a coil-built body. It was underglazed and fired in an electric kiln to cone 6. I experimented with this vessel by using underglaze to add surface designs and patterns that complimented the form. I wanted the shapes and lines to create interest in the wheelthrown portion, and simultaneously unify the two halves. There was a conflict during the design process of either leaving the form blank or covering it entirely. For the sake of experimentation, I went with the latter.

2025 Portfolio
This year I got really sick and spent the majority of the year in recovery. I also moved to a new studio space towards the end of the year.
I was inspired to continue pushing my work in a new direction, and made a small number of pieces for close friends. I leaned on themes of how happiness can be fragile with the construction of my small vase. By using an orange mason stain and including it in my clay body, I was able to make an orange vase that was built with coils. I continued to explore emotion with clay by having agateware with clay made from brightly colored mason stains. The swirls of color served to represent the swirl of emotions and uncertainty that can happen during distressing times. By combining the agateware with the grid motif, I am able to create a relationship between emotion and logic. This is something I would like to pursue on a bigger scale in the following year.
