Sunflower Ceramic Studio was established in 2019 after I moved to Houston. I started the business because of my love for clay and how it engages all of the senses. My products are made primarily by throwing on the pottery wheel, with a focus on making dinnerware

Our Journey

Maria Hernandez is the founder and studio ceramicist of Sunflower Ceramic Studio. Equipped with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Angelo State University, she was able to gain experience in the art world and learn the necessary skills for operating her own production pottery studio.

Sunflower Ceramic Studio pays strong attention to detail to create functional ceramic pieces that have elegant forms. The entire process of making one piece from start to finish can take four to six weeks.

Third Coast Clay and Lotus Claymatters presents: World’s Largest Clay Tools! Representing Houston’s growing clay community, these tools are huge compared to the ones in your beginner’s pottery kit. By comparing these small tools to their giant counterparts, it shows how much Houston’s clay community started off small and has grown to the large community it is today. With 10+ ceramic studios and hundreds of potters here in Houston, we hope that the community continues to grow.

🌻 If neutrals are more you thing, I’ve got your back! The rest of the glazes I have available are satin black, speckle brown, and speckle white. The Tiny Triangles are small, but are super versatile. They also stack together very nicely. If you’re interested, you can find them on my website or my next upcoming market.

🌻 Tiny Triangle Dishes are here! Here are about half of the glaze options available - for if you want a splash of color. They can be used to hold small jewelry and take up minimal space on your counter. Or you can use them in the kitchen to hold those pinches of salt and pepper. They’re available on my website right now, but I’ll also have them in my upcoming market in February.

🌻 I’m finally back in the studio, but before I can start working I have to clean the space. It could definitely use some cleaning and organizing. I’ll be here tomorrow and I’m starting the year by making grid mugs. Can’t wait to see what this year holds.

🌻I was asked to do a custom mug and it turned out to be a success! The customer wanted an oversized mug shape with her name and lined with her favorite color. Starting January 1st, I will have my commissions open. If there is an object I make that you want customized, we can work together and bring your vision to life. If you’ve wanted a grid tumbler in your own color combo, or if you want a mug in a color that’s sold out, we can work to make it happen. 🌻 This semester I was a mentor to Esther, a senior in high school. We went over the concepts of business and art, and how that looks like in the real world. She did some research on the business side, such as cost of ceramic equipment, and also did some assigned reading, such as The Potter’s Dilemma. She also participated in a few markets with me and got to see the sales and customer service end of a ceramic business. On the ceramic side, she learned a lot through hands on experience. She learned how to use an extruder gun to make coils, a slab roller to make trinket dishes, and also how to make pots on the pottery wheel. Her final project was making a dinner ware set that consisted of 2 dinner plates, 2 side plates, and 2 bowls. She did such an incredible job and learned so much from the experience. I am so proud of her and all she accomplished!

🌻Wanted to say thanks to everyone who showed up to the Bayou City Clay Crawl yesterday to support Houston’s ceramic art scene. Thanks for stopping by my studio, giving the tours was a lot of fun. It made me so happy to see you guys in my space and asking questions about my work and process. It warmed my heart to see familiar faces. Overall, the event yesterday was so much fun. Thank you guys for being a part of it ❣️
